Regreso al Mar | a journey through the music of modesta bor

This project is dedicated to Modesta Bor who is arguably the most important Venezuelan composer of the 20th century. Created by Ricardo Navas Valbuena, who was born in Mérida, Venezuela, it is solely driven by passion for Modesta's craft and history.

"Regreso al mar" is a project that aims to present Modesta Bors music worldwide through interpretations by musicians and singers from Germany, France and Venezuela.

The project was funded and made possible by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Today is Santiago de los Caballeros de Mérida's 463rd anniversary. This is the city where Modesta Bor lived and carried out intense artistic and formative work. Regreso al mar wants to give a small gift to Mérida, from Mérida and with people from Mérida...don't miss it!!!

Parallel to her work as a composer, Modesta Bor devoted a large part of her life to teaching. For fourteen years she conducted the children's choir of the Escuela de Música Juan Manuel Olivares, and from 1973 she assumed the composition teaching post at the Escuela de Música José Lorenzo Llamozas. Among her composition students were: César Alejandro Carrillo, Gilberto Rebolledo, Miguel Astor, Rosa Briceño, Marianella Machado, Alejandro Pulido, Luis Eduardo Galián, Dagmara Piñero, Alejandra Romero and William Blanco.

A fundamental element in the diffusion of Modesta Bor's music has been the valuable work of Armando Nones and Ediciones ARE. This publishing house, founded in 2011 in Mérida-Venezuela, has published a large part of Modesta Bor's work. Thanks to the work of Armando Nones as publisher, we were able to obtain the scores for the production of Regreso al mar.
